Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield was born on this day in 1919. An electrical engineer, he was taking a walk one day in 1967 when he got the idea of being able to reconstruct what was inside a box by taking readings of all the angles through it. His concept used hundreds of x-ray beams to create different images of organs and tissues inside the living body. These could then assembled by computer into true cross-section images. Hounsfield shared with Allan Cormack the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the creation of the computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner. The CAT scan has gone on to become a significant diagnostic tool for physicians around the world.
