Ch.18 History (Pgs.1329-1387) the Virtue of Justice

Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech
-The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover
A way to live together in peace, and thereby transform
This pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood.
If this is to be achieved,
Man must evolve for all human conflict a method
Which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation.
The foundation of such a method is love…
I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America
And an audacious faith in the future of mankind.
I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the
Ambiguities of history.
I refuse to accept the idea
That the “isness” of man’s present nature makes him morally incapable
Of reaching up for the eternal “oughtness”
that forever confronts him.

On this day in 1066, William the Conqueror, of France, landed on the English Coast and defeated the British at the Battle of Hastings. Thus Williams began a ruthless, 20 years reign over England, setting the stage for centuries of war. To squeeze the greatest possible taxes from his subjects. Williams kept a detail record of everything they owned. This filled people with such doom and gloom that it became known as “The Domes day Book,” It was compared to the last Judgment, or “Domes day, “described in the Bible, when the deeds of Christians written in the Book of life were to be placed before God for judgment.

History of Valentine’s Day and Birth goes back to Ancient Times
On February 14, Americans celebrate love and friendship by exchanging cards, flowers, and candy. Although the origins of Valentine’s Day are murky, ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia, a spring festival, on the 15 of February. When the holiday moved to the 14 of February, Christians associated it with the saint day of several early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The romance associated with Valentine’s Day may spring from the medieval belief that birds select their mates on February 14. During the Middle Ages, lovers recited verse or prose to one another in honor of the day.
In 1817, Frederick Douglass was born on a slave plantation in Maryland. He was separated from his real mother at an early age. The woman to whom he was given used to call him her “little Valentine.” Douglass adopted February 14 as his birthday because he didn’t know the actual date of his birth.
On this day in 1556, Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of the English kings Henry VIII and Edward VI, was declared a heretic and executed after Queen Mary I reunited the Church of England with the Roman Catholic Church. Anglican culture later celebrated Cranmer, an influential theologian, as a martyr. Scholars credit him with writing and compiling the first two Books of Common Prayer, which established the basic structure of Anglican liturgy for more than four centuries.

The idea of “making things better” can seem overwhelming — there are so many needs. But the wise ones tell us that making things better is always within our scope, if we begin to think creatively about our daily lives: The idea of giving gifts ought to be a pure joy, but so often it isn’t. The older my daughter gets, the more expensive her friend’s birthday presents get. And the more parties she goes to. Actually, gift-giving occasions of all kinds are opportunities to reinvent the practice. For her birthday, one friend of my daughter asked her guests to bring a dog toy and $5 to donate to the local SPCA. That’s a child who “gets it.” One of my co-workers “gets it” too. He gave each of us a gift from The Heifer Project. That’s a terrific organization where a few dollars can buy a farm animal to give a Third-World family a shot at self-sufficiency. In my name, he bought a yak — which somehow I thought was appropriate. —Cathy Lewis New Morning Treasury 2008

Are we ever going to see a world where people from different religions live together in peace? Sometimes it feels like we’re running uphill. So what keeps me going? I think of the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an, and the line that God created us into different nations and tribes so that we may come to know each other, to appreciate our differences. I see God at work when young people of different faiths and backgrounds come together to build bridges of peace. I see God at work in so many people — Christians and Jews and Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists and others — who are all running up this hill. One day, we’ll surprise ourselves. We’ll reach the top — and find we have lots of company. —Eboo Patel New Morning Treasury 2008

You know a dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows.
And a dreamer’s just a vessel that must follow where it goes.
Trying to learn from what’s behind you and never knowing what’s in store
makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shores.
And I will sail my vessel ‘til the river runs dry.
Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky.
I’ll never reach my destination if I never try,
So I will sail my vessel ‘til the river runs dry.
Too many times we stand aside and let the water slip away.
To what we put off ‘til tomorrow has now become today.
So don’t you sit upon the shore and say you’re satisfied.
Choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tides.

Slavery Consider Immoral 1688
On this day in 1688, the first anti-slavery meeting in the New World
was held in this house in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Quakers and Mennonites, led by Francis Pastorius, were united in the belief that slavery was immoral.
The public meeting resulted in a strongly worded document proclaiming
that “we shall do to all men like as we will be done ourselves;
making no difference of what generation,
descent or color they are.”

February 1 National Freedom Day celebrates freedom from slavery, and recognizes that America is a symbol of freedom. National Freedom Day was established in 1948 to remind us that America stands for, and is a symbol of freedom for all people. The roots of this special day come directly from the end of slavery and the signing of the 13th amendment outlawing slavery. Celebrate this day by reflecting upon your own freedoms that you enjoy by being fortunate enough to be in America. Millions of people in the world are not free. Origin of National Freedom Day: Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, created National Freedom Day. He believed that there should be a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. So, February 1st was chosen to celebrate National Freedom Day. On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a the bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day. Flower of the Day: Caladium Recipe of the Day: Green Beans with Cheese

CHIEF RED JACKET — 1806 Great Speech
The following is a speech given by Chief Red Jacket (Iroquois) in response to a group of missionaries attempting to convert the native’s religion.
I am indeed awed by the vast number of Natives that have abandoned the religion given to them by their forefathers…a religion with such depth and power and a great part of their culture…to me and many others it is difficult to comprehend the abandonment of this for any other religion. I can accept no excuse or reason…you might as well talk to a brick wall as to change the depth of my understanding and belief in this matter.
Today more than ever many people's the world over have great empathy (perhaps not the best choice of words) for the original natives. This includes (but not inclusive) the white people. Now more than ever before has the time been so ripe to set aside hatred and bitter words that have long been directed to the whites in general and unite with all peoples with a common goal and that goal is quite simple…the good of all mankind. To do this it is now in the power of the natives to understand this…unite for the common good of all mankind. Now is the time to take up this cause and when this is begun people will see the truth, the love and compassion of a great people and will be drawn closer to them (natives) then ever imagined.
I will not discuss how this can come about and some steps that can be now taken…first a real interest must be displayed. This land is owned by no one and yes it was given to the natives for their use and care with instructions to do no harm to each other….yes now many occupy this land and do not yet understand this….yet they someday will…The Creator has not forgotten HIS red children.
It is also saddening to me to see how many think so little of prophecies and visions of their forefathers that seemingly little stock is now taken of them. Where now is your faith BROTHER? It would not take much study to understand that nearly all of the past prophesies are related. I now urge you all to wake up….TAKE HEART……it is you that have forgotten and no longer believe…not the CREATOR…….....................................................................
I write this with love and compassion for all peoples……....................
CHIEF RED JACKET-1806
Friend and brother, it was the will of the Great Spirit that we should meet together this day. HE orders all things and HE has given us a fine day for this council. HE has taken his garment from before the sun and caused it to shine with brightness upon us. For all these things we thank the GREAT SPIRIT….and HIM ONLY! Brother this council fire was kindled by you. It was at your request that we come together at this time. We have listened with joy to what you have said. You requested us to speak our minds freely. This gives us great joy, for we now consider that we stand upright before you. All have heard your voice and can speak to you as one mind. Our minds are agreed.
Brother listen to what we have to say…..there was a time when our forefathers owned this great land. Their seats extended from the rising to the setting sun. The Great Spirit had made it for the use of the Indian, HE created the deer, the antelope and other animals for food. HE made the bear and beaver, their skins served us for clothing. He had scattered them over the country and taught us how to take them. He caused the earth to produce corn for bread. All these things He had done for his Red Children because He loved them. If we had some disputes about hunting grounds, they were usually settled without the shedding of blood.
BUT….an evil day came upon us…your forefathers crossed the great waters and came upon this land. Their numbers were small. They found us FRIENDS, not enemies. They told us they had fled from their own country on account of wicked men and had come here to enjoy their religion. They asked us for a small seat..we took pity upon them..granted
their request and they sat down amongst us. We gave them corn and meat…they gave us poison (rum) in return. Brother, our seats were once large and yours were very small, you now have become a great people and we have scarcely a place left to spread our blankets. You have got our country…BUT, you are not satisfied, you want to force your religion upon us.
Brother, continue to listen. You say that you have been sent to instruct us as how to worship the GREAT SPIRIT in a manner which is agreeable to HIS MIND, and, if we do not take hold of the religion which you white people teach we will be lost forever. How do we know this to be true? We understand that your religion is written in a book, and if it was intended for us as well as you….why has not the GREAT SPIRIT given to us, and not only us, but to our forefathers the knowledge of that book with the means of understanding it rightly? We know only what you tell us about it. How shall we know when to believe, being so often deceived by the white man? Brother we do not understand these things. If there be but one religion, why do you people all not agree upon it—as you all can read the book?
Brother, we are told that your religion was given to your forefathers and has been handed down from father to son. We too have a religion which was given to our forefathers and has been handed down to us, their children. We WORSHIP in that way. It teaches us to be THANKFUL for all favors we receive…to LOVE one another and to be UNITED. We NEVER quarrel about religion because it is a matter BETWEEN EACH MAN and THE GREAT SPIRIT. Brother, we do not wish to destroy your religion or take it from you. WE ONLY WANT TO ENJOY OUR OWN.
Brother we understand that you have been preaching to the white people in this place. These people are our neighbors are acquainted with them. We will wait a little while and see what effect your preaching has upon them. If we find it does them good, makes them honest and less disposed to cheat Indians, we will again consider of what you have said.
Brother, you now have heard our words and this is all we have to say at present. As we are going to part we will take you by the hand (shake) and hope that the GREAT SPIRIT will protect you on your journey and return you safely to your friends.
( A response to white missionaries attempt to convert his tribes religion )

First American Poet to earn his Living Solely From Writing Verse
On this day in 1807, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine. His poems told stories of America in her youth — such as Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha. He created stirring tales about early American heroes such as Paul Revere. Longfellow’s poems were read aloud in countless American homes, and he is said to be the first American poet to earn his living solely from writing verse.

Civil War (1861-1865)
So far from, engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have sheer-fully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more; you should never wish to do less. I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself. Whiskey, I like it. I always did, and that is the reason I never use it. My chief concern is to try to be an humble, earnest Christian. Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly character. It is well that war is so terrible—lest we should grow too find of it.

Summary of the Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln 16 President of the United States
On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln
spoke at the dedication of the National cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The Orator of the day was Edward Everett, a famed speaker
Lincoln’s brief Gettysburg address became a cornerstone of American Expression
Of the nation’s ideals, mission, and patriotism.
In some 271 words, Lincoln captured the meaning of the war,
Transforming “eighty-odd years” into the sonorous “four score and seven,”
Using imagery of birth, death, and resurrection to move from what
“Our fathers brought forth…a new nation, conceived in Liberty” and dedication to the principle that “all men are created equal” to the war itself. Lincoln at the cemetery said lay those “who here gave their lives that that nation might live.” Lincoln paid honor to the Union dead, not praising their officers, not celebrating their victory, but claiming their sacrifice for the principles of the Declaration of Independence. At the same time, he emphasized that these men had died to preserve the nation, although the war previously had been fought for the Union. Subtly, Lincoln transformed a Union of states into a National Union. That nation stood for “a new birth of freedom” based on “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Lincoln unified past, present, and future into an evocation of American mission. Today, the words of the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address are Enshrined in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The American Eagle... Dr. Wayne Dyer 545
Last night, last night I had a strange dream.
I was walking on the banks of a turbulent stream.
Found a large bald eagle lying wounded on the path
An old man rode up to us, visible was his wrath
He lifted the bird with tender loving care.
Dusted off its feathers and whispered in its ear.
Rise up, rise up my American Eagle, rise up and fly
Spread your majestic wings, beneath Gods great blue sky
Display your stars and stripe, strength, pride and liberty
Rise up my American Eagle
For brave men like us, fought and died to set you free
You could tell without asking, the man is a soldier
Proud of his uniform, a wise and crafty warrior
As the big bird flew he sat himself off tail
Saying with a satisfied smile, this great nation must never decline
Inquired about him as he rode slowly into the sun
He replied without turning, they call me Washington
Faded into the landscape man and regal bird
Standing agape and pondering, the message that was heard
Rise up, rise up American eagle and irrefutable positive spirit.

John 12:44-50… Summary of Jesus’ Teaching
Then Jesus cried aloud: “Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day…

1864 Salvation Army
William Booth founded the Salvation Army, July 5, 1864.
He’d grown up in poverty and became a street preacher in London’s slums
Where he converted tramps, drunks and thieves

The work could be discouraging
But a turning point came
When Booth adopted the Military language of an Army-

The Rise of Big Business 1800-2000
In the late nineteenth century,
Many factors converged to help transform
The United States from a predominantly
Agricultural to an industrial nation.
American enterprise expanded to unprecedented levels of production
Consumers of this generation acquired a level of success,
A success that past the majority of early 1900’s generation’s dreams
An achievement only the highest of quality enriched lives experienced
New hero’s emerged,
As the “self-made” businessman replaced
The happy yeoman
As the ideal role in American society
As historian Glenn Porter
Stated in the Rise of Big Business,
In the decades after the Civil War,
When people spoke of Big Business
They had in mind three kinds of enterprises in particular.
1.) Railroads
2.) Manufacturing
3.) Corporations and Banks
The leading families of those businesses were:
The Vanderbilt’s,
The Carnegies,
The Rockefellers and the Morgan’s
These leaders personified the changing nature
Of the economy
And the coming of new economic order which people lived,
The consumption of matter goods…the very quality of life, changed.
