2 Chronicles1:11-12 (NIV) - God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire andyou have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of yourenemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom andknowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdomand knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessionsand honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you willhave.”

Solomon learned well from his father, David. When giventhe opportunity to ask for anything that he wanted, Solomon asked for thewisdom to be a servant of God and His people. It is when we don’t idolizesuccess that God can give it to us, because success will not change who weprimarily are. In desiring wisdom, Solomon was focusing on the tools that wouldallow him to handle his kingdom well. When we desire wisdom over achievement,we too set the stage for a richness of life. The good life can be easilymistaken as material gain, but we have a witness that God has a greaterdefinition of what it means to live life to the fullest.

Aware that the lack of communication always brings separation and suffering, we are committed to training ourselves in the practiceof compassionate listening and loving speech. We will learn to listen deeply without judging or reacting and refrain from uttering words that can create discord or cause the community to break. We will make every effort to keep communication openand to reconcile all conflicts, however small.
